A perfect day in Pimlico
Our mini-guide to Pimlico, the London neighbourhood that balances its upscale central location with a neighbourhood feel.
Pimlico, London
This is the upscale residential neighbourhood that’s perhaps best located of any in the capital. It’s bordered by Chelsea, Belgravia and Westminster. Besides the enviable location, it offers a community vibe, making it feel removed from the anonymous world-city hustle and bustle of central London while sitting on its doorstep. It has to be of the capital’s best areas to choose as a base. There’s more than enough to do to fill a day.
A perfect morning begins with coffee – we love Pimlico Fresh on Wilton Road, though be prepared be queue on the weekends. On a Saturday, take a wander around Pimlico Farmers’ Market in Orange Square – great for feeling slightly self-righteous as you treat yourself to organic fruit or artisan pastries.
Once you’re caffeinated, browse the designer shops and upmarket interiors stores on Pimlico Road. Linley, Howe, Robert Kime and antique shops such as Jamb and Gordon Watson are perfect for either window-shopping or splashing the cash. If you’re after cute independent shops, then Moreton Street is the place to go.
Pimlico’s location means there’s a wealth of sightseeing and cultural options within walking distance: Tate Britain, Victoria Palace Theatre, and Big Ben, Parliament Square and Westminster Abbey are all under half an hour’s walk. Or take the 24 bus from St George’s Square to Parliament Square (ten to 15 minutes); or the underground from Pimlico Station on the Victoria line, changing at Victoria to the District/Circle line going east, two stops to Westminster (five to ten minutes).
There are few places to stay in Pimlico that can compete with the Artist Residence, a ten-bedroom townhouse with eclectically-styled rooms and a restaurant and bar that have a genuine neighbourhood feel.
