Albenga
Impressive centre
This town at the Centa River mouth is more spacious than others. It boasts a monumental centre with early Christian churches and a Roman naval museum (rare finds have been made in the neighbourhood). The Town Hall is ancient, a baptistery with Byzantine mosaics even older, perhaps 5thC. The Torsero River 8 km north has fossil beds. The Centa estuary, though sub-urbanized, still supports exotic birdlife and Gallinara Island offshore is botanically important and a breeding ground for gulls. Visit by arrangement with owner through Albenga tourist office. Networks of caves along the shore.
