Alise-Sainte-Reine (Alesia)
Ancient battle site
Close to this small village, the ancient hill site of Julius Caesar’s 52 BC victory over the Gauls is an atmospheric place to stretch your legs. Terrific views all around, dominated by a massive bronze statue of the Gaulish chieftan Vercingetorix – all flowing locks and walrus moustaches. For those with a genuine interest, there are also the excavated remains of Gallo-Roman Alésia, with various finds displayed in a museum.
