Home / Australia / Exploring locally / Central Queensland outback, inland from Rockhampton / Anakie

Anakie

Gemfields

40 km west of Emerald. The gem rush began here in the 1870s, and has continued after a fashion ever since – both with large commercial mines and individual prospectors. Yes, there are still a few hardy individualists who manage to make a living out of working claims in this inhospitable territory. Others visit the gemfields on a regular basis – all driven by the hope of finding ‘the big one’. It’s easy to get hooked.
