Artists Drive

Multi-coloured landscape

On the Artists Palette section of Artists Drive, a 9-mile loop-road off Hwy-178. Volcanic debris embedded in a series of mud hills forms a multi-coloured landscape – shades of amber, red, brown, black and violet, mostly caused by the presence of oxides in the rock, which change their hue according the angle of sunlight. The most colourful display is in the late afternoon.
