Auburn
Successful early settlement
On I-80 and Hwy-49, 26 miles East of Sacramento. Much of modern Auburn provides housing for Sacramento commuters and it is left to the commendable Old Town quarter to keep people aware of Auburn’s roots as one of the Gold Country’s more successful settlements. Alongside the inevitable antique shops, the Old Town’s cobblestoned streets hold Auburn’s 1892 fire station, the imposingly domed Placer County Courthouse, California’s oldest continuously-used post office, and the tight alleyways of a former Chinatown district.
Just outside the Old Town, the Gold Country Fairgrounds, 1273 High Street, is the location for the Gold Country Fair, the first week of September annually. It’s a four day long American Fair extravaganza, which draws loads of attention for it’s family friendly activities.
There is also the Auburn State Recreational Area, which is by far the best place to visit for recreational biking, hiking, fishing, and motorbike riding. It also hosts several high endurance races throughout the year, giving it the title of Endurance Capital of the World. It hosts, among others, Western States Endurance Run, Auburn International Half-Ironman Triathalon and American River 50 Mile Equestrian Ride.
