Aulnay

Intriguing church

On the D950, 18 km NE of Saint-Jean-d’Angély. A former pilgrim staging-post, the Eglise de Saint-Pierre stands at the edge of the village shaded by cypress trees and adorned with remarkable carvings. The central portal is flanked by scenes representing Christ in Majesty and the Crucifixion of St Peter; then follow round to the south doorway with its hooped bands of closely packed figures, mythical birds and beasts overlooked by a frieze of grotesques. The capitals of the nave are equally splendid with the renowned annotated small-eared elephants by the south transcept (a Latin inscription reads ‘These are elephants’ for the edification of bemused medieval peasants), and there is a beautifully decorated window in the apse.
