Avigliana
Old hill town with medieval houses and magnificent views
The old hill town on the edge of two lakes (watersports) is now part of Turin’s stockbroker belt. Towers, arcades, medieval houses and a ruined 17thC castle survive, but the main attraction is the nearby Sacra di San Michele. The 10thC fortified abbey clings to a rock 500 m up, guarding the approach to the Susa Valley. Note the frescos, carvings and, on the Scalone dei Morti (‘stair of the dead’), the zodiac door. The wide-ranging views from the terrace are a bonus.
