Once visited by luminaries including George Sand and Tennyson, this quiet, leafy spa town makes a pleasant pit stop before or after the switchback drive over Col du Tourmalet. There are several café-bars on central place aux Thermes, opposite the little Musée Salies, and you can stretch your legs in the Pare Thermal de Salut.
