Bagno di Romagna

Spas, trekking, fishing, swimming and history

The Latin poet Martial praised the warm springs which burst from rocks near the Mandrioli pass (1,173 m). Spa treatment, especially for rheumatic diseases, has been going on since the Middle Ages. The nearby St Agnes Fountains are now incorporated into a thriving health and holiday complex. This is a very pretty area. Trekking, fishing, tennis, swimming, riding, canoeing and mountain-biking are offered, along with minibus excursions to the high forests. There is a sculpture par; and art shows and other events succeed each other with scarcely a break. Much sensitive restoration has gone into the old buildings and streets. The modern fountains and ceramic-tiled mansions are impressive and everything is scrupulously clean. Roman remains and hot springs are housed in the building in the photograph.
