Beaulieu-sur-Mer
Experience an ancient Greek villa
Just east of Cap Ferrat, the quiet winter resort of Beaulieu shelters one of the most unusual buildings in Europe. Built by archaeologist Theodore Reinach in 1910, Villa Kerylos is a painstaking reconstruction of an ancient Greek villa overlooking the Baie des Fourmis. All modern conveniences are carefully concealed, while the mixture of authentic and reproduction furnishings runs the gamut from statuettes to elegant amphora. The naiad bathroom is spectacular, its enormous octagonal marble bath adorned with fish mosaics; and Reinach lived the part too, dressing in period Athenian garb, bathing with the boys and housing women in separate quarters.
