Home / California / Key Places to Visit / The Northern Coast / Bodega Bay

Bodega Bay

Fishing town

On Hwy-1, 48 miles North of San Francisco. Home to a declining but substantial fishing fleet moored in its sheltered harbor, Bodega Bay is an affable little town which makes a decent overnight stop, and any visiting Alfred Hitchcock fans might amuse themselves by spotting the local buildings used by the director in his 1963 film, The Birds, although some of them are 5 miles inland, at the town of Bodega.

Another popular pass time between January and May every year is the grey whale migration that passes Bodega Bay. Whales can be spotted off the Ocean Overlook at Bodega Head, or alternatively arrange boat trips with local agencies out to see them up close. There are also several art galleries around town, including The Ren Brown Collection, which houses the largest collection of Japanese prints in California.
