Cabrerets
Pretty riverside village close to prehistoric caves
A pretty riverside village on the Célé, Cabrerets fills up in summer with visitors heading for the Grotte du Pech-Merle. Somewhat off the beaten track compared with the Vézère valley, these wonderful prehistoric caves with their 20,000-year-old paintings offer an informal prehistoric gallery with naturally sculpted limestone rock formations thrown in. There are some 60 animals – bison, mammoths, horses with flowing manes – and a dozen human forms, as well as the spooky footprints of ancient cave-dwellers. The Musée Amédée Lemozi offers artefacts and an interesting film show.
