Cambo-les-Bains

Spa town and seaside resort

See guide-du-paysbasque.com. A spa town beside the River Nive with a 19thC resort perched above the original Basque village, Cambo is renowned for its mild climate. Edmond Rostand, poet and author of Cyrano de Bergerac, came here to take the cure in 1900, and was so taken by the place he built Villa Arnaga, on the D932 a short distance north of town. A sprawling Basque-style edifice with a rather precious interior featuring panelling, curlicues, frescoes and assorted memorabilia, the villa is surrounded by formal gardens.

From Cambo-les-Bains, the D932 heads back to Bayonne (20 km). However, with time to spare, you may prefer to return via the Route Impériale des Cimes. Head for Hasparren on the D10, and after 6 km turn left for the D22 Route Impériale. The road affords splendid views of high peaks (cimes) and of the coast.
