Campi Flegrei

Hot springs

Myth, legend, natural phenomena and uncontrolled building development join hands on this area whose name translates as the ‘Burning Fields’. Low hills surround hot bubbling springs called solfatare. At Pozzuoli’s solfatara is the cave where the custodian used to walk his dog for the amusement of visitors. Thanks to heavier-than-air fumes the animal would collapse while the custodian emerge unscathed.
