Castelnaud

12thC fortress on the Dordogne

A picturesque clamber up through the huddle of stone cottages arranged around its rocky base, Château de Castelnaud lords it over the south bank of the Dordogne opposite rival Château de Beynac. Founded in the 12thC and held by the English for most of the Hundred Years War, the château has been partially restored and equipped with a bellicose complement of medieval weaponry from giant catapults and crossbows to pikes and daggers. There are walking trails in the woods, and kayaks for hire down by the bridge.
