Recklessly heaped up on two torrent walls, it must have been built for a bet. East and west the Garfagnana valley is impressive, the river tumultuous after rain, but the town has only its ‘local colour’ to offer. Ten km south near Galliciano is the Grotta del Vento, the ‘Wind Cave’, a lesson in geology with its submerged tunnels, snow-white outflows, ancient fossil galleries and great vertical abyss.
