Chablis
Home town of the delectable white wine
www.tourisme-chablis.fr. An unpretentious small town with a big name in wine. There is a clutch of wine merchants (not the best prices); the Eglise de Saint-Martin, with a Romanesque doorway; and a pretty riverside walk along the Promenade de Patis.
The mineral, delectable Chablis wines are produced from the chardonnay grape, and the best vineyards are those on the east bank of the River Serein. The tourist office publishes a handy leaflet listing caves where you can taste and buy local wines direct; lucky visitors on the fourth weekend of November will find the annual wine fair in progress.
