Charleville
Must-see observatory
800 km west of Brisbane on the Warrego Highway. This is the small town at the western end of the Warrego Highway, where it meets the Mitchell Highway, which heads north into the central Queensland outback.
There are a few things to do here, including visiting the Royal Flying Doctor Base, and learning about their heroics in saving outback Australian lives (www.flyingdoctor.org.au/About-Us/Our-Bases/OB-QS/Charleville-Base). Though possibly the highlight is the Charleville Cosmos Centre and Observatory, a must-see for any keen astronomers (www.cosmoscentre.com). 3 km from the centre of town, it is often in pitch black so that light pollution doesn’t ruin the views of deep space. With very powerful Meade telescopes they show you the cosmos in mind-bending ways, and will leave you feeling very insignificant. In the winter it can get very cold here so be sure to layer up when going out on this night trip.
