For a perfect fairytale château in the woods, look no further than Château de Pierrefonds (14 km south-east of Compiègne via the  D973). It is in fact a bit of a cheat, having been completely rebuilt on the site of a former castle during the 19^th century. But with its turrets and ramparts sprouting from a rocky outcrop above the village, it makes an impressive sight.
