Chateauneuf-du-Pape

Historic vineyards, famous wine

Wine enthusiasts en route to Avignon can make a back-road pilgrimage to the vineyards of Châteauneuf-du-Pape (10 km south of Orange via the D68). The Avignon popes planted the first vines here in the 14thC, and watched over them from a fortress, which was destroyed but for a tower in the Wars of Religion. The tourist office, 3 rue de la République has lists of the various producteurs. Visitors to the early August Fete de la Véraison may be lucky enough to find free dégustations.
