Cherbourg

Ferry port with a huge supermarket

Only qualifying for mention by virtue of its status as an incoming ferry port, Cherbourg is best left behind as soon as possible (see the Cotentin Peninsula).

If you do have time to spare here, you could view the panorama of the town and enormous harbour from the Fort Roule with its Second World War museum, Musée de la Liberation, on the main Valognes road (N13). There is a vast Auchun hypermarket off the N13; or plunder the equally huge Carrefour supermarket in town. For wine, try the Cave du Roy, rue de la Tour Carrée.
