Chieti

Roman monuments

Legend says that Achilles founded Chieti but its ancient monuments are all Roman: capitol, baths, water tanks, theatre, a clutch of restored temples. Chief medieval relics are a 14thC tower and the cathedral. The archaeological museum has one unique exhibit, the 6thC BC Warrior of Capestrano in limestone, a majestic souvenir of a culture about which little is known. The provincial library has some of d’Annunzio’s manuscript poems (he was born at Pescara). From the upper town there are fine views of the sea and the Maiella and Gran Sasso ranges.
