Ancient and modern combine harmoniously in this historic town: many hotels, shops and restaurants, a centro storico of medieval churches, palaces with ornate facades and a notable civic tower. Palazzo Vitelli has the municipal picture gallery with important works by Signorelli and Raphael, coloured terracottas by Andrea and Antonio della Robbia and a quaint Madonna by the anonymous early-Renaissance Master of Città di Castello. In the town museum, next door to the 11thC cathedral, is another Madonna by Pinturicchio. Two kilometres east is the tiny spa town of Fontecchio.
