Crystal Cathedral
Glass and steel
Off 1-5 in Garden Grove, 22 miles South East of Los Angeles. Designed by noted architect Philip Johnson for top-rating TV evangelist Robert Schuller (who began his preaching career in a disused drive-in cinema) and completed in 1980, the steel trusses of the Crystal Cathedral support 10,000 panes of tempered silver glass. With shafts of sunlight bouncing around the 12-story interior, the effect as you step inside is indeed like entering a giant crystal. Much of the multi-million dollar cost of the cathedral was raised by donations from faithful followers of Schuller’s weekly cable-TV show – the Hour of Power.
