Devonport

The lighthouse

58 km north west of Launceston. The uninspiring commercial port where the ferry from Melbourne puts in. You can see the only sight of interest from the deck of the ferry as you come in to land. This is the lighthouse high up on Mersey Bluff, which dominates the west of Devonport. The lighthouse was built in 1889, and its light is visible up to 30 km out to sea. It makes a nice place to start a tour of Tasmania, and probably the best place from which to explore Northern Tasmania. For visior information the Devonport Visitor Centre is on 92 Formby Road, open daily from 7.30 am, tel. +61 03 6424 4466.
