Dole
Former capital of France-Comte
www.tourisme-paysdedole.fr. Once the capital of Franche-Comté, Dole slumbers peacefully above the Canal du Rhône au Rhin as it joins the Doubs. Stone houses and narrow streets cling to the hillside around the substantial 16thC Eglise de Notre-Dame; in rue de Besancon you can pick up the essentials for a picnic from half-a-dozen charcuteries; and there are pretty public gardens stretching down to the water’s edge near the old tanners’ quarter. Locuis Pasteur was born here in the humble Maison Pasteur, 46 rue Pasteur. Although the inventor of pasturization probably never wore the galoshes on display, this small museum contains a few documents and snippets of memorabilia.
