www.grandevreuxtourisme.fr. Evreux is the capital of the Eure region, and its Cathédrale de Notre-Dame is worth a quick stop if you are not pressed for time. The Renaissance carvings around the north door date from the height of the Flamboyant period, as do the marvellously delicate leaf and flower motifs in the transept and lantern tower. Despite fire, bombs and storms, much of the antique glass has been restored.

The Musée d’Evreux, housed in the 15thC former archbishop’s palace, includes Gallo-Roman archaeological finds, plus fine carved misericords and tapestries in the medieval section.
