Feltre
Graceful Dolomites foothill town
Castle and lofty clock-tower stand behind San Rocco’s church at the highest point of the old town. Within close radius are the cathedral, a Palladian palace and a baroque theatre: a dignified complex of buildings, tall and straight on sloping steets and piazzas, adorned with statuary. At the civic museum you can see Gentile Bellini paintings and learn the contentious history of feudal struggles between church and state which preceded Venetian rule. Alpine scents and colours temper the sunny fertility of the Piave plain. Feltre’s graceful architecture and the soothing layouts of neighbouring villages and farms are among the best features of this Dolomites foothill area.
