Forca Canapine

Wild uplands

From Norcia (see separate entry, this section) make for the wild Canapine Fork. From either side your ascent is like that of a jumbo jet gaining altitude after take-off, but by no means in the same straight line. Miles of hairpin bends deliver you at last to pass level (1,543 m), to a large holiday hotel and winter sports installations. The broad Castelluccio snowfields 10 km north also offer winter sports. From Forca Canapine you can join walking excursions through the lonely, mystical Sibillini mountains, visiting Lake Pilato at 2,200 m and the Sibyl’s grotto, about which guides tell tall tales. A road tunnel 20 km long will soon abandon these picturesque heights to the skiers.
