Fremantle
Beaches, pubs, and cafes
20 km south east of Perth city centre. This is where everyone goes to enjoy themselves. ‘Freo’, as the locals call it, has some fine beaches, plenty of pubs and sidewalk cafes, and all the fun of a seaside resort.
Fremantle has always been a lively spot. Its rather grandiose Town Hall on High Street dates from 1887, when one of the local councillors was shot dead by a gatecrasher during the opening party. At the other end of the High Street you can see where this ungrateful guest ended up: the Round House. This strange 12-sided building was the city jail, and dates from 1831, which makes it the oldest building in Western Australia.
