Gambarie
Garibaldi links
A tidy, brightly-coloured hill town like an Alpine resort. Main winter playground is Monte Scirocco (1,676 m) 0.5 km south-east. North is the high wasteland of Aspromonte, where a red-white-and-green fence 6 km from town protects the Garibaldi monument. He was wounded and captured here in 1862, after King Victor Emmanuel disowned him. More to local taste was Benedetto Musolino, the last Calabrian brigand and a Robin Hood figure. Captured at Gambarie in 1928, he died in prison 30 years later.
