Geelong

The National Wool Museum

On the coast 75 km South West of Melbourne. On first sight, Geelong is as attractive as Pittsburg. The main point of interest in this industrial port is the National Wool Museum, which just about says it all. If you want to know about this fascinating product of long woolly grazing, hurry down to the National Wool Museum on Brougham Street, (open Monday to Friday 9:30am to 5:00pm, Saturday to, Sunday 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, entry fee; www.geelongaustralia.com.au/nwm), where you might learn a thing or two you never knew before. Did you know, for instance, that the strand of wool made from one sheep can often extend several times around a cricket field?

However, Geelong also has a few historic houses worth seeing. One of these, the Corio Villa at Eastern Beach, was prefabricated out of iron sheets in Scotland. When these bits duly arrived after the long voyage from Glasgow in 1856, they discovered that the instructions on how to assemble the building were missing. Just like many a builder we know, they immediately set to work assembling it by guesswork. Alas, the result is sadly unsurrealistic. For further details of even less interesting local historic buildings, apply at the Tourist information booths: one at Avalon Airport, one on the Geelong Waterfront and the other in the busy Market Square Shopping Complex.
