Grant Grove

Kings Canyon visitor center and walks

At Grant Grove, the most developed section of Kings Canyon National Park, you’ll find a useful visitors’ centre and a short walk leading to the sequoia grove holding the General Grant Tree, the third-largest sequoia and one known to Americans as the “nation’s Christmas tree.”

A more unusual walk is the Big Stump trail, which traverses an area littered by the stumps of sequoias felled when commercial logging was carried out here during the late 1800s. Though the logging stopped long ago, only recently have there been signs of recovery: the walk passes many young, second-growth sequoias steadily reclaiming this devastated portion of forest.
