Greenough
How the pioneers lived
20 km south of Geraldton on Brand Highway. The big attraction of this small farming community is the Central Greenough Historic Settlement (www.centralgreenough.com). This consists of a dozen or so buildings that have been restored to their original 19thC splendour (or primitiveness, depending upon your taste). Either way, it’s original. This was how they lived in those hard-bitten pioneering days, when the flies outnumbered the humans by a million to one and you couldn’t get a bath for love or money. Gaze and wonder (no need to sentimentalize).
Nowadays there are a few attractions worthy of visiting Greenough, Ellendale Pool is a cooling fresh water pool that you might take a dip in, or simply picnic by. Alternatively Greenough River has a nice beach with great surfing all year round. And be sure to marvel at the leaning trees up the road – bent by the unending wind, they’re quite the sight.
