Home / Australia / Exploring locally / Northern Queensland Outback, Inland from Townsville / Hughenden

Hughenden

Remote outback town

250 km west of Townsville on the Flinders Highway. It’s a long drive to Hughenden, with not much but the wild emus for company in the endless outback. And there’s not that much here when you finally arrive. First place to head for is the local swimming pool, which is good and large. This is on Resolution Street.

After that you can try the Hughenden Dinosaur Centre (see www.australiasdinosaurtrail.com/hughenden-local-attractions), where they display the reassembled bones of a dinosaur who lived in swamps around here several million years ago. According to one disgruntled local I met, his descendants are still propping up the bar in the Grand Hotel.
