Ile d’Ouessant
Southern entrance to the Channel
The English translation of Ouessant is Ushant. The island is served by a daily boat service from Brest. (There is a shorter hour-long crossing from Le Conquet.) Crowned by a radar tower, the 7 km-long island is an annexe of the Parc Naturel Régional d’Armorique, with a small town, free-ranging sheep, and an impressively rocky and wind-swept north-western shoreline. Here the Phare de Créac’h marks the southern entrance to the Channel with a lighthouse museum at its base. There are footpaths along the cliffs which make vertiginous roosts for seabirds; above the port, the Phare du Stiff began life as a Vauban watchtower in the 17thC. To get about, bicycles can be hired from the port, and in the town of Lampaul (4 km W by bus).
