Kata Tjuta (The Olgas)
Curious rock features
50 km west of Uluru/Ayers Rock. Curious dome-like rock features, whose highest peak, Mount Olga, rises almost to 550 m. Aptly called Kata Tjuta (many heads) by the Aborigines, these rocks were raised by the same geological process as Uluru, their foundations plunging thousands of metres into the earth. Kata Tjuta may well have been seven times their present size, before they were sandpapered by the wind to their present 36 domes.
Try the well-marked Valley of the Winds Walk, which takes you 6 km through the rocks. Before you set out for Kata Tjuta, be sure to get a map at the nearest ranger station at Uluru – see below.
Kata Tjuta is in the same national park as Uluru/Ayers Rock.
