Home / Australia / Key Places to Visit / Northern Territory: Darwin and northern outback / Katherine

Katherine

Visit the gorge

On the Stuart Highway 315 km South East of Darwin. The river here is the first permanent running water north of Alice. You’ll find that your main attraction is probably the local public swimming pool, which is out beyond the bus station. The only other place of interest is the Katherine Gorge, which lies 15 km north-east of town. This is a spectacularly remote and beautiful series of linked gorges and rapids – good for walking, canoeing and swimming (but ask about the crocs first).
