Kunnunurra
Largest artificial lake
On Victoria Highway, 172 km west of Timber Creek. Only founded in the late 1950s, to service the construction of the Ord River Dam, 70 km down the road, Kununurra now has a population of more than 4,000, making it the largest Settlement in the east Kimberley.
The dam has created Lake Argyle, the world’s largest artificial lake, which is capable of holding almost ten times as much water as Sydney Harbour. The former construction camp has been transformed into a tourist resort, complete with cruises on the lake.
In Kununurra itself it’s worth visiting the Waringarri Aboriginal Arts Centre (www.waringarriarts.com.au) just north of the town centre on Speargrass Road, and the gorge at Hidden Valley, just a couple of kilometres north of town.
If you want to take a three-day self-guided canoe trip down the Ord River through Lake Kununurra, contact Kununurra Backpackers. This 74-bed budget accommodation hostel organizes various tours and activities – www.kununurrabackpackers.com.au.
