Lakefield National Park (Rinyirru National Park)
Huge wilderness area
80 km north west of Cooktown. From Cooktown you can detour off the main Peninsula Development Road through this national park (www.nprsr.qld.gov.au/parks/rinyirru-lakefield). It’s 150 km before you emerge at the other end, which gives you some idea of its size. This huge wilderness has some fine wetlands and is filled with wildlife of all kinds – from crocodiles to wild pigs. Birders and anglers can look forward to spotting rare specimens as bird and fish species are especially prolific. There are camping facilities only in the park, the best spot being at Horseshoe Lagoon on the steep bank of a large watering hole near swamplands. Canoeing and swimming are not recommended as this is croc country.
