Les Andelys
Spectacular fortress
www.lesandelys-tourisme.fr. The majestic white battlements of Richard the Lionheart’s stronghold, Château Gaillard, rise sheer from the limestone cliffs above the river. Built in less than a year (1196-97) in an attempt to check the French advance on Rouen, it occupies a spectacular site with a commanding position and terrific views. The English garrison was eventually overcome when the French crept in via the latrines. Of the original towers circling the forward redoubt, only one remains, and the main fort was largely dismantled on Cardinal Richelieu’s orders in the 17thC.
