Les Charmettes
Home of philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau
The 18thC philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau and his lover Madame de Warens kept a country retreat 2 km above the centre of Chambéry. They met in Annecy in 1728 (she a 28-year-old landlady, he a 16 year-old apprentice), and occupied Les Charmettes between 1736 and 1742. The house, set in gardens with a private chapel, has been turned into a museum.
