Les Invalides

Historic veteran soldier hospice

quai d’Orsay, 7e. Due south of Pont-Alexandre III, Louis XIV’s veterans’ hospice bears all the hallmarks of the Sun King’s grandiose style. Founded in 1670, the monumental complex centres on the classical Eglise de Dôme housing Napoleon’s tomb beneath a vast gilded dome. On either side of the Cour d’Honneur, the Musée de I’Armee displays an exhaustive collection of militaria and Napoleonic memorabilia. Renaissance armour and uniforms, weaponry from pikes to Second World War artillery, scale models of Vauban’s 17thC fortresses and the emperor’s stuffed dog combine to make this national collection one of the finest war museums in the world.
