Lodi
Wineries
On Hwy-99, 35 miles South of Sacramento. Lodi itself is of minor appeal but its surroundings are noted for their grapes and several wineries can be found close by. For tours and tastings, the best of the bunch is the Oak Ridge Vineyards, 6100 E. Hwy-12 (http://www.oakridgewinery.com), where the tasting room (open 10 am-5 pm) is located inside a 50,000-gallon storage tank. Just south of town, the expansive San Joaquin County Historical Museum (www.sanjoaquinhistory.org) will prove to anyone in any doubt that farming is what makes the Central Valley tick – every implement that ever turned the region’s sod seems to be gathered here. The museum also features accounts of regional Native American history and gives a potted account of local wine production.
