Manduria

Market town for oil, wine and tobacco

Oil and wine, grain and tobacco enter this market town, negotiating a shabby industrial estate en route. Near the Capuchin church a section of cyclopean walls (5thC BC) is identifiable. The grotto called Fonte di Plinio is actually mentioned in Pliny as sacred to some water-god. A few large town houses give the place dignity. Palazzo Imperiali is not as extravagantly named as it sounds: the owner’s surname was Imperiali.
