Lot valley medieval town
See www.france-voyage.com. Nestled in the Lot Valley on the northern edge of the Parc National des Cévennes, the pint-sized capital of Lozère radiates from a higgledy-piggledy medieval town centre which can be crossed on foot in five minutes flat. The narrow cobbled streets, arches and twisting alleys crowd around the jaundiced yellow stone flanks of the Cathédrale de Notre-Dame, rebuilt after the 16thC Wars of Religion. The cathedral is a showcase for a comprehensive selection of stained glass through the ages, Aubusson tapestries hung in the chancel, 17thC carved choirstalls, and a typically Auvergnat Black Virgin. Just off place du Beurre, the Musée Ignon-Fabre houses local history exhibits. A short walk north of the centre, via the quaintly named rue Chou-Vert (‘green cabbage street’), the Pont Notre-Dame has borne traffic across the Lot since the 13thC.
