Monopoli
Once a flourishing seaport
It presents a tattered appearance from seaward, consistent with its history of pirate incursion and sturdy defiance. Under the Byzantines, 1,000 years ago, it was a flourishing seaport. The Aragonese castle looms over the harbour and bastions protect the medieval quarter. Some churches are built above rock-chapels in the cliffs – the crypt of San Procopio is the best-preserved. Bathing from rocks at Santo Stefano, 3 km south on Route 379.
