Mont Sainte-Odile
Strategic hilltop site
A winding drive into the Vosges hills leads up to Mont Sainte-Odile (12 km south-west of Obernai via D33), named for the patron saint of Alsace. The Celts first fortified the strategic hill-top site with a 10 km-long earthwork known as the mur païen. Later a convent was founded here which has served as a place of pilgrimage since the 16thC, notably on December 13, St Odile’s feast day. There are visits to the convent with its tranquil gardens, cloister and the chapel containing St Odile’s remains.
