Home / Australia / Key Places to Visit / Queensland: Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast / Moreton Island

Moreton Island

40-km beach

Across Moreton Bay from Brisbane. The island can be reached by ferry, barge or boat – or by swimming (it’s been done). There are several companies that will get you to and from the island.

Moreton Bay Island is almost 40 km long, and has miles of sand dunes and fine beaches. But that’s practically all there is here. There are roads, but taking a vehicle is costly, you’ll need a 4WD, as well as a permit to drive. There is a range of accommodation from camping, dorms and B&Bs. There are finer beaches elsewhere in this region, which can be just as deserted, and are far more accessible. For more information see www.visitmoretonisland.com.
